Seabank Resort Environmental Policy

Climate change is already impacting human health around the world. In 2012, in Malta only, pollution from traffic and power stations was 37 times (Maltastar.com) higher than the norm. At Seabank Resort & Spa we make every effort to minimize our environmental impact with an aim to encourage responsible tourism and have a positive impact on the local environment.

While still offering our guests comfortable, environmentally friendly stay and an outstanding All Inclusive experience, our focus is on waste, water, electricity and education in order to:

Reduce and separate waste

  • Reduce water usage
  • Reduce energy usage
  • Encourage employees and guests to become environmentally aware (responsible)

Waste Management

At Seabank waste is measured with the aim of reducing it.

  • For instance, we are minimizing usage of bottled water with the support of our guests. Each guest room is equipped with four water bottles. Upon their arrival our guests are encouraged to refill these plastic bottles from the various water dispensers that are available in the lobby. By the end of the year, we will start selling recycled plastic water bottles with logo to clients with the aim that they will use it in resort and then keep it as a souvenir and thus eliminating completely the disposable plastic bottles.
  • We buy shampoo bottles in bulk. The shampoo bottles are refilled from the dispensers once finished.
  • We have stopped buying disposable plastic cups for the pool area and instead we have invested in polycarbonate re-usable glasses.
  • We are buying our breakfast preserves in bulk packaging thus eliminating the plastic packaging of the portioned ones.
  • We rely heavily on draught drinks including wines, beers and soft drinks. In this way we reduce drastically the usage of glass bottles.
  • We are separating cardboard, paper and glass from other waste.
  • We are now working with other hotels and the national waste service company so by next year, we will also separate organic, plastics and metal.

Energy Saving

  • Our two power factor correction units help us maximise the efficiency of the electricity we get from our dedicated sub-stations that are connected to the national grid. The building management system (BMS) helps us manage this energy throughout the hotel and in our plant rooms in an automated and efficient way through a variety of metres, timers and controls.
  • All our rooms are controlled via a room management system (RMS) that controls energy wastage through motion sensors and control switches. It means when no one is inside the room the system detects no movement and it turns off the electricity automatically including A/C.
  • At Seabank at least 95% of lights are energy efficient lighting products both in public areas and guest rooms.
  • In addition, all of our room heating ventilation & air-conditioning is supplied through a water primary circuit rather than relying on the use of fluorocarbon gases.
  • As from this year, every single unit of electricity and every litre water, fuel or gas is being monitored, recorded, calculated per bed night and analysed. This will help us plan our consumptions for next year where we will be able to compare, set targets on savings and measure any actions taken to save energy.

Water Saving

  • With a hotel having a guest capacity of a small village, it was clear  from the onset that we would not put more pressure on the island’s limited water resources …  we had to be self-sufficient.
  • We have therefore invested in two reverse osmosis plants to convert seawater into enough potable water to cater for our guests’ needs. We are able to convert sea water into roughly 200 cubic meters of fresh water a day.
  • We also operate a state-of-the-art, 180,000 litre per day sewage treatment plant that treats all the sewage produced by the hotel. This plant recovers a large quantity of high-quality water that is re-used in 2nd class applications such as for flushing toilets, and for landscaping. The plant takes up 400 m2 of space in a purposely designed plant room. Using the latest membrane treatment technology the plant is even capable of producing polished water of drinking quality standards. The process produces no bad odour, and the only outputs are cleaned water, and a sludge which needs to be disposed of off-site every few months. With this plant alone, we save 5,700,000 litres of water per annum.
  • We catch all our storm water and use it for irrigation and to supplement the 2nd class water system.

March 2014! The Seabank Hotel has participated in the EU LIFE+ Investing in Water Project and successfully carried out the water saving initiatives.
